Step 1 — Write the date as three separate pieces
Take your birth date and split it into month, day, and year. Do not merge them yet. This ordering is the part people get wrong, and it is the part that decides whether a master number survives.
We will use 11 June 1985 all the way through, because it is one of the dates where the two common methods disagree — which makes it far more useful as a teaching example than a date where everything lines up.
Step 2 — Reduce each piece on its own
Reducing means adding the digits together until you are left with a single digit — unless you land on 11, 22, or 33, which are master numbers and stay as they are.

Step 3 — Add the three results, then reduce once more
6 + 11 + 5 = 22. Twenty-two is a master number, so it stays. A person born on 11 June 1985 has Life Path 22.
If the total had been, say, 27, you would reduce again: 2 + 7 = 9.
Now the part most guides skip
Plenty of sites use a different order: string every digit of the date together and add them all at once. For the same birthday that gives 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 31 → 3 + 1 = 4.
Same person, same date. One method says 22, the other says 4. Both follow a rule consistently; they simply apply the master-number rule at different moments.
A 22 reduces to 4. An 11 reduces to 2. A 33 reduces to 6. The two methods never give you unrelated numbers — the "add everything at once" method just hands you the reduced form of the master number the other method preserves, or occasionally the reverse. If one site says 11 and another says 2, you are looking at the same underlying chart described at two different resolutions.
How often do the methods actually disagree?
We ran both methods across every calendar date from 1 January 1930 to 31 December 2025 — 35,064 days — and compared the results.

Every single disagreement across all 35,064 dates was one of six pairs: 11 vs 2, 22 vs 4, or 33 vs 6 — in either direction. There were no other disagreements at all.
The drop after 2000 is arithmetic, not mysticism: year digit-sums for the 2000s are small (2 + 0 + 0 + 5 = 7), so totals rarely climb into master-number territory in one method but not the other.

Notice that the second method does not consistently favour master numbers — on 11 April 1985 it produces the master and the first method does not, while on 11 June 1985 the reverse is true. That is why "the method that gives more 11s" is not a fair description of either.
Which method should you use?
Our position, stated plainly: reduce each piece separately. That is the method used by the major twentieth-century systematisers of Pythagorean numerology and by most working numerologists today, and it is what every calculator on this site uses. It also has the better internal logic — month, day, and year are three distinct pieces of information, and a master number occurring in your day of birth is meant to be visible rather than dissolved into a running total.
But we would rather you know the disagreement exists than pretend it does not. If you have been carrying a Life Path number from another site for years and it differs from ours, this is almost certainly why, and you can now check in ten seconds which method produced it.
One rule that trips everyone up
Keep master numbers at every stage, including the day. A birth day of 22 stays 22; it does not become 4 before being added. If you flatten masters early, you will produce a third set of answers that matches neither method — and this is where most hand-calculation errors actually come from, not from the arithmetic.
